This small, expressively rendered portrait is among the earliest surviving paintings by Sylvia Sleigh. It was executed at the coastguard cottages in Roedean, a village just east of Brighton. The seaside resort is suggested by the young woman’s deck chair and straw hat. Elizabeth Stobart was a paid model who twice sat for Sylvia Sleigh.
